only when the compound capable of tautomerization is in the liquid phase, or in solution. And that is just the case with the free radicals under consideration. 6. The two radicals, a-naphthyl-diphenylmethyl and a-naphthylxanthyl, were found to give a molecular weight less than that calculated for the monomolecular phase. Schlenk and Renning's" results show that a-naphthyl-biphenyl-phenylmethyl exhibits the same unusual behavior. We' have good reasons to believe that our results are not due to experimental errors, and we took pains to verify them repeatedly. The cause of this unexpected result may possibly lie in a still further dissociation of the triarylmethyl itself, R R' R" C=, RR'C+R".

I-17: The Mechanism of Gonadal Sex Determination

Background In mammals, a single exon gene SRY on the Y-chromosome is activated in the XY gonadal primordium and initiates a cascade of molecular and morphological events leading to testicular differentiation. SRY-encoded protein (SRY) is a transcription factor harboring a HMG-box DNAbinding motif that upregulates SOX9, which encodes another transcription factor sharing the DNA binding motif wit...

I-43: Identification of SOX3 as an XX MaleSex Reversal Gene in Mice and Jumans

Background: Mammals utilise an XX/XY system of sex determination in which the Y-linked gene SRY (Sexdetermining region Y) exerts a dominant masculinising influence on sexual development. Sex chromosome homology and comparative sequence studies suggest that SRY evolved from the related SOX3 gene on the X chromosome, although there is no direct functional evidence to support this hypothesis. The ...

Sex determination in the chicken embryo.

The chicken embryo represents a suitable model for studying vertebrate sex determination and gonadal sex differentiation. While the basic mechanism of sex determination in birds is still unknown, gonadal morphogenesis is very similar to that in mammals, and most of the genes implicated in mammalian sex determination have avian homologues. However, in the chicken embryo, these genes show some in...

Genetics of mammalian sex determination: some unloved exceptions.

The genetics of sex determination is a child of the twentieth century, which overturned the previously held view that sex was determined by the environment. The last quarter of the century witnessed an active search for sex-determining genes in mammals. Although successful, the modus operandi of these genes remained unknown, and the relationship between the sex-determining systems of mammals an...

Sexy splicing: regulatory interplays governing sex determination from Drosophila to mammals.

A remarkable array of strategies is used to produce sexual differentiation in different species. Complex gene hierarchies govern sex determination pathways, as exemplified by the classic D. melanogaster paradigm, where an interplay of transcriptional, splicing and translational mechanisms operate. Molecular studies support the hypothesis that genetic sex determination pathways evolved in revers...

Temperature-dependent sex determination: upregulation of SOX9 expression after commitment to male development.

In mammals, birds and reptiles the morphological development of the gonads appear to be conserved. This conservation is evident despite the different sex determining switches employed by these vertebrate groups. Mammals exhibit chromosomal sex determination (CSD) where the key sex determining switch is the Y-linked gene, SRY. Although SRY is the trigger for testis determination in mammals, it i...
